Qualification: Level 4 Jumps; Sprints, Hurdles and Relays
I first became interested in coaching when I was looking for a High Jump coach (there were none in Mackay at the time) for my eldest son when he was 10 years. When at school states in Brisbane I met Leslye Muller who began coaching him with many trips to Charters Towers. With Leslye's encouragement and mentoring I began coaching him.
From here I decided to do a coaching course. Have been a member of the ATFCA since June 2000, when I was accredited with Level 1 Young Athlete and a few weeks later with Level 1 Jumps.
In June 2001, I received my Level 1 Sprints, Hurdles & Relays.
In January 2005, I qualified with Level 2 Jumps (this was the last course in the old Level 2). This was subsequently changed to Level 4 Jumps when the new “level 1 – 5” system was introduced.
A couple of years later in January 2009, I gained my level 4 Sprints, Hurdles and Relays.
November 2003, I completed Level 1 Coaching Athletes with Disability course.
August 2007, I completed my Level 1 in Strength and Conditioning.
Have also done Sports Medicine Level 1 trainer. I am attached to the Slade Point Athletic Club as a coach, but I also coach athletes outside the club. Have coached athletes to National level, who have medaled at this level.
2006 was an exciting time being selected as Jumps coach for the ANQ team to the Oceania Championships in Fiji, as well as Jumps coach for the Athletics Australia team to the Oceania Grand Prix in Samoa.
Also in 2006, was one of the coaches for the Queensland Athletes with Disability team to the Telstra A series in Sydney.
Just as exciting was being selected as a Jumps coach for the 2008 Qld Athletics School team to Pacific School Games in Canberra.
I keep myself up to date with the latest coaching techniques and information by attending the regularly held ATFCA Coaching Congresses. Have also attended weekend coaching sessions by Roy Boyd (hurdles) and Cliff Mallet (sprints) and various other weekend sessions sponsored by our Club and other clubs in our region.
Have also attended many Oz Squads as an observing coach. I hold a Blue Suitability card (Commission for Children & Young People).
The most rewarding aspect about coaching, is taking on a raw athlete and watching them develop through the years to a successful athlete with good technique – not necessarily a medal winner.
