Townsville’s famous PlaytimeDash for Cash was held in the heart of the city and hosted by the Townsville Road runners over a picturesque 4.6km course. As 350 competitors lined up for the race the eventual winner and course record holder was Defence Force Athletics distance competitor Anthony Craig. Anthony’s blistering pace put him almost over a minute ahead of other competitors as he took the title and the $500 winner’s cheque. Anthony was using this meet to assist with preparation for the Open Championships in Brisbane where he has qualified for the 3000 meter event. Anthony’s prize money covered the cost of his new shoes which took him to victory. When asked about how he thought the race went he said “I think the heat this morning affected a lot of runners. There were also a few hills which I was pushed on early on from other top place getters and kept me going. ” Anthony’s partner, Daina Surka was the Women’s winner. Daina mentioned that “having someone to train alongside on those days you really don’t want to get out of bed help’s a lot!”

With over $3000 worth of prizes (not only for top place getters but also for random spot prizes) this ever popular event has been successful once again! It was a nice, relaxed, friendly atmosphere where both competitive and social runners/walkers were able to raise profits for the Heart Foundation! At the conclusion of the event, athletes were rightly rewarded with recovery fuels such as fruit and drinks and stuck around for the Presentation. Recently appointed Athletics North Queensland Development Officer Cameron Clayton said “The atmosphere was fantastic”. “Hopefully numbers continue to grow in future years to come and athletes from other states can come and challenge Anthony as I definitely can’t”! “This was my first Townsville event to witness and compete in and I really enjoyed the experience. I didn’t know what to expect but it was very much like the successful winter series competitions that I am use to back home in Melbourne.” As the track season comes closer for North Queensland Athletes the Townsville Road Runners will continue to compete in their year round road races. Townsville’s Road Runners hold weekly races.
