AS if being an Olympic medallist, motivational speaker, occupational therapist and Pride of Australia nominee wasn't enough, Julie Smith has achieved the lot with a disability.
The Pride of Australia Medal, supported by the Townsville Bulletin, recognises the extraordinary achievements made by members of the community. The vibrant Townsville woman, who is missing part of her left hand, is the latest nominee for the prestigious medal for her inspirational achievements and community contribution.
·
BUSH FIRIES HEROES
Ms Smith has recently returned from the Australian Championships with a bronze in the 200m and a gold in the 400m and she also picked up a bronze in the 200m last year at the Beijing Paralympics. ·
LEANNE DOING IT FOR THE KIDS
As well as working in the rehab science department at James Cook University and training for various representative competitions, Ms Smith also takes time out to act as a guest speaker for schools and community organisations. "I think when they see me it gives the kids a different perspective on disability because they often think of it as something negative," she said. ·
TEACHER KICKING GOALS
"I just tell them my story and how my mum told me I could achieve anything no matter what as long as I didn't give up. "I'm stunned to have been nominated but I just think it's great the average person can be recognised for the special things they do in everyday life."
