Tassal Group Airlie Beach Marathon Festival on 17/18 July 2021.
This year’s Marathon Festival is in the final planning stages and has the biggest marathon field since it was introduced in 2017.
The Athletics North Queensland Championship Marathon is the marquee event of the festival and is shaping up to be a great competition with a field that includes four previous winners, a few previous podium finishers, and some stiff competition from down south.
Traditionally, many entries are received in the last couple of weeks, and this seems to be the case again this year with the total number of entries expected to match those of 2018.
This year sees the introduction of special medals to recognise those who finish the marathon and half marathon. All other competitors will receive a fantastic finisher medal featuring our famous Humpback whales.
This year’s festival will introduce the Airlie Beach Foreshore Magic Mile to be run on Saturday, 17 July at 4:00pm. There is prize money for the fastest male and female and ribbons awarded in the 6 to 9 and 10 to 15 year age groups.
The festival also caters for all age groups from 4 years old and up. It features races of 1 mile, 1 km, 2 km, 5km, 10km, 21.1km and 42.2 km.
Entrants in the kids 1km and 2km will earn points for their school. The primary school with the highest number of participants on a percentage basis will win a cash prize and the floating trophy.
The Event Manager and President of the Whitsunday Running Club, Tim McQuoid-Mason said: “It has been another difficult year for event organisers, however the response from the runners has been amazing and we look forward to a great couple of days of running in paradise!”
